Sun June ‘s “Mixed Bag”: A Cinematic Ballad Inspired by Tom Petty

Sun June, the indie group that recently announced their upcoming album Bad Dream Jaguar, has gifted us with another enticing glimpse of their highly anticipated record. Following their dreamy lead single “Get Enough,” and tracks “Easy Violence” and John Prine,” the band returns with “Mixed Bag.”

This endearing and cinematic ballad draws inspiration from the legendary Tom Petty. The band offers some insights into the song, shedding light on its themes:

“In some ways, this song allowed us to reflect and become more aware of how absurd our arguments can be. Lines like ‘You were searching for a reason to be mad’ and ‘I know every single fight we’ve ever had’ are both accusations and boasts that we couldn’t help but laugh at. Each chorus builds upon the last, as we acknowledge the repetitive nature of our past disagreements but still tally the score.

‘Mixed Bag’ was a collaborative effort recorded in both Texas and North Carolina. Dan Duszynski, Alli Rogers, Danny Reisch, Max Lorenson, and Chad Doriocourt all contributed to crafting this dusty, Petty-esque song. It encapsulates the struggle to maintain hope for the future, but we aimed for the song’s infectious rhythm to outweigh its melancholy.

For the video, we enlisted the help of Vanessa Pla to capture the rural outskirts of Austin on Super 8 film. We drew inspiration from 1940s PSAs and vintage Texas corporate films. Vanessa and her team ventured into cow pastures along brand new highways, sharing the frame with friendly longhorns.”

Mixed Bag” offers a unique blend of introspection and musical allure, promising that “Bad Dream Jaguar” will be a captivating exploration of emotions and sound.

Bad Dream Jaguar is scheduled for release on October 20th via Run For Cover, and Sun June’s creative journey invites us all to delve into the depths of their heartfelt music.
