Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan recently shared insights about his current projects and the future of the legendary band. Speaking ahead of his participation in the Mark Lanegan tribute concert at London’s Roundhouse, Gahan reflected on the impact of the 2023 Memento Mori tour, his creative process, and the evolving dynamic with bandmate Martin Gore.
The tribute concert, held on what would have been Mark Lanegan’s 60th birthday, brings together a lineup of artists including Josh Homme, Chrissie Hynde, and Greg Dulli to honor the late grunge icon. Gahan’s connection to Lanegan ran deep, as the two collaborated on projects with Soulsavers and Humanist, forming a friendship after touring together in the early 2000s.
Gahan described the Memento Mori tour as both demanding and rewarding, admitting that he has spent much of the past five months adjusting back to daily life. While he has dabbled in writing during this downtime, he emphasized that he is not currently pursuing any major creative plans. Instead, his focus has shifted to supporting his daughter, who is establishing herself in Europe’s music scene. Gahan humorously noted his limited influence in her endeavors, acknowledging her independence as she navigates her own artistic path.
When asked about the possibility of new material from Depeche Mode, Gahan revealed that while he and Gore have been in touch, neither has felt the urgency to restart the creative process. A recent reunion at a personal event in Italy reaffirmed their connection but underscored the need for a break after the intense energy spent on Memento Mori.
“We’ve talked and shared ideas,” Gahan said, “but it’s normal to take time after such an intense period of work. We’re both just letting things settle for now.”
Gahan’s other creative pursuits include collaborations with Soulsavers, with whom he contributed to several albums, and his solo projects, which continue to reflect his range as an artist. Despite the current pause in Depeche Mode’s plans, Gahan’s ongoing engagement with music, family, and personal inspiration hints at a future that remains open to new possibilities.
The Mark Lanegan tribute concert, featuring performances from a stellar lineup of collaborators and friends, serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of the music community and the legacy of one of its most compelling voices. For Gahan, it is also a chance to honor a cherished friend while reflecting on the many stages of his own career.
