System of a Down Returns to the Stage, Future of New Music Uncertain

System of a Down is preparing for its most extensive run of concerts in years, with sold-out shows across North and South America in 2025. This marks the band’s first extended tour since 2017, when they began limiting their performances to just a few select dates per year. While these upcoming concerts have sparked speculation about a possible return to a regular touring schedule, bassist Shavo Odadjian remains cautious about the band’s long-term plans.

In a recent interview, Odadjian emphasized that these performances are a way for the band to reconnect and evaluate their future together. He noted that internal dynamics have improved and that everyone is in a positive mindset, but there is no guarantee that this tour will lead to additional global dates or new music.

The last full-length albums from System of a Down, Mezmerize and Hypnotize, were released in 2005. Since then, the possibility of a new record has remained uncertain. Frontman Serj Tankian previously acknowledged creative differences within the band, which contributed to their extended hiatus from studio work.

Addressing the question of new music, Odadjian made it clear that while discussions happen occasionally, there is no concrete plan for an album. If they were to record new material, he stressed that it would need to meet a high standard, given the band’s legacy and past success. Their last major release, Hypnotize, won a Grammy, further raising expectations for anything they might produce in the future.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding new recordings, System of a Down has released music in recent years for charitable causes. In 2020, they dropped the singles Protect the Land and Genocidal Humanoidz to raise funds for Armenia and Artsakh during conflicts in the region.

For now, the focus remains on their upcoming tour, which will feature more performances in a single year than the band has played collectively over the past seven years. Whether this leads to a resurgence in activity beyond the stage remains to be seen.
