Elbow, the renowned Manchester band, is back with a gritty and explosive new single titled “Balu,” offering a tantalizing glimpse into their forthcoming 10th studio album, Audio Vertigo, set to release on March 22 via Polydor/Geffen.
“Balu” showcases Elbow delving into a heavier, more dynamic sonic landscape, characterized by synth-heavy textures and triumphant horns. Frontman Guy Garvey‘s vocals soar over an infectious groove, while the song exudes a sense of experimentation and rhythmic intensity.
The accompanying official video blends live performance footage of Garvey and the band with abstract clips featuring a mysterious masked character, adding an enigmatic visual dimension to the track.
Described as sharing “much musical DNA” with the broader album, “Balu” reflects Elbow’s exploration of new sounds and rhythms throughout the recording process. It represents a departure from their previous work, signaling a bold evolution in their musical direction.
This latest single follows the lead track “Lovers’ Leap,” which Elbow debuted live on The Graham Norton Show in January, further heightening anticipation for Audio Vertigo‘s release.
In a conversation with NME last October, Garvey offered insights into the album, describing it as a “big fat record” with diverse themes ranging from maniacal rants to poignant reflections on toxic relationships. Produced by Craig Potter, the album incorporates elements of garage rock, alt-country, and hip-hop, showcasing a rich tapestry of influences that shape Elbow’s distinctive sound.
As Elbow prepares to embark on a UK and Ireland headline tour in May, fans can expect an electrifying live experience accompanied by supporting act The WAEVE, featuring Blur’s Graham Coxon and singer-songwriter Rose Elinor Dougall.
With “Balu,” Elbow invites listeners on a sonic journey filled with raw energy and musical innovation, signaling a thrilling new chapter in their illustrious career.
