At the 2023 MTV VMAs, Chris Brown‘s nomination in the Best R&B category for his collaboration with Chlöe on “How Does It Feel” didn’t sit well with everyone. Selena Gomez, who was in the audience, couldn’t hide her reaction when the nominees were announced.
As the nominees were revealed, a camera focused on Selena Gomez, who was seated next to her collaborator Rema. Gomez initially had a subtle smile and was poised to applaud. However, when “How Does It Feel” was announced as a nominee, Gomez’s demeanor visibly changed. She placed her hands in her lap, frowned, and grimaced. Her reaction shifted again when Yung Bleu and Nicki Minaj‘s “Love In The Way” was announced, and she clapped, and her smile returned.
In the end, SZA‘s “Shirt” won the award for Best R&B. Other nominees in the category included Alicia Keys‘ “Stay” featuring Lucky Daye, Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, 21 Savage, and Diddy‘s “Creepin’ (Remix),” and Toosii‘s “Favorite Song.”
Gomez and Rema’s “Calm Down” was nominated for three awards and won in the Best Afrobeats category. This wasn’t the first time Gomez drew attention for her reactions at recent events.
