The New “Princess Diaries” Movie Is Happening 18 Years Later!

Welcome back to Genovia’s kingdom. According to a person familiar with the project, a third Princess Diaries movie is still in the very early phases of development. The cast hasn’t been revealed yet.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is working on the new movie, and Aadrita Mukerji from Supergirl is penning the script. The third movie will be a continuation of the adored 2000s films, according to sources, and not a brand-new reboot.

According to THR, Anne Hathaway, who played Mia Thermopolis, an American adolescent who discovers she is the heir to the throne of the European nation of Genovia in the 2001 film, does not yet have a deal to return to the series. She has, however, been outspoken about the possibility of a third film in the series.

She said there was a screenplay out there and that she would love to be a part of it to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live in 2019.

“I want to do it,” Anne said at the time. “Julie wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen.”

The actress continued, “We don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready. But we’re working on it.”

According to THR, Debra Martin Chase will now also produce the new movie. Julie Andrews, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Erik von Detten, Hector Elizondo, and Sandra Oh also appeared in the original Disney films alongside Anne, but there have been no casting announcements for the third film.
