Shawn Mendes Recreates ‘Illuminate’ Album Cover 6 Years Later

Shawn Mendes’ Billboard 200 chart-topping sophomore album, Illuminate, was released nearly six years ago, and the singer paid respect to the fan-favorite LP with a lovely remake.

The artist stopped by the ShawnAccess experience at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena while on tour in support of his 2020 album, Wonder. He shot a photo with the same backdrop as his 2016 record, holding his guitar on a chair as he did in the original cover image.

Illuminate was released by Island Records and Universal Music Group on September 23, 2016. Following Handwritten, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums list in 2015, this was Mendes’ second No. 1 album. The album had a bevy of singles, including “Mercy,” “Treat You Better,” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” which were included in the album’s reissue.

Mendes isn’t the only celebrity who has reproduced an old album cover this week. Avril Lavigne, 37, uploaded a very sentimental TikTok in which she recreated the classic cityscape cover art from her 2002 debut album, Let Go, to mark the 20th anniversary of its release.

“Just went to the location where I shot the cover of my debut album ‘Let Go’ here in New York,” Lavigne tweeted about the TikTok, which she wistfully captioned “20 years later…”
