It’s Time to Speak Up About the Misogyny in the Music Industry

In the last few years, women pop stars have been re-shaping the industry, notably with Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, and Taylor Swift, to name a few. One might think that women are finally taking the lead and dominating the scene. Unfortunately, this is not quite the case.

To put things into perspective: A study published by She Is The Music shows that only around 21.7% of women are artists, and 12.5% of women are songwriters. And when it comes to producers, only 2.7% of women are producers.

Things have surely changed in the industry thanks to the ongoing activism by fans and artists themselves. However, to this date, countless female artists are being paid poorly, being assaulted either verbally or physically, being bullied for not meeting society’s expectations, and so on.

It’s crucial to understand that we still have a long way to go and that it is a collective responsibility to decrease the existing gender gap in the industry!
