A newly released posthumous track from SOPHIE, titled “Berlin Nightmare,” has been unveiled as part of the buildup to her upcoming self-titled album. This album, set to drop on September 27th through Transgressive and Future Classic, is the first major project since her untimely passing in January 2021.
The single features Evita Manji, SOPHIE’s former girlfriend, and follows the earlier release of “Reason Why,” a collaborative effort with Kim Petras. This new track furthers the artistic tribute, showcasing a powerful mix of acid techno with minimalist and wonky influences. Benny Long, a longtime collaborator, helped produce the song, which explores a more intense, raw side of SOPHIE‘s music style. The track is notable for its straightforward yet profound production, weaving through a soundscape of surreal and dissonant sounds that engage and challenge the listener.
Scheduled for a late September release, the upcoming album is a narrative exploration of SOPHIE’s musical explorations prior to her death. Her family has expressed that this album represents a deeply personal project, crafted alongside many of her close friends and collaborators.
SOPHIE’s sudden death was a devastating blow to the music world. Renowned for her innovative approach that merged hyperpop, electronica, and underground dance music, she also became a celebrated figure within the transgender community. Her 2017 music video for “It’s Okay to Cry” marked a public affirmation of her identity and promoted visibility and acceptance.
Throughout her illustrious career, SOPHIE collaborated with several leading artists, including Madonna, Diplo, Camila Cabello, and Charli XCX, the latter of whom has paid homage to SOPHIE’s influence on her music, particularly in her recent track “So I” from her album Brat.
