The much-awaited preview for Barbie has finally arrived! “Since the beginning of time. Since the first little girl ever existed. There have been… dolls,” narrates the iconic Helen Mirren, in the opening scene of the trailer for Mattel’s signature toy.
Led by Lady Bird and Little Women director Greta Gerwig, Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the omnipresent doll and Ryan Gosling as her boyfriend, Ken. “It was terrifying,” says Gerwig, speaking of the process, “ I think there’s something about starting from that place where it’s like, ‘Well, anything is possible. It felt like vertigo starting to write it. Like, where do you even begin? What would be the story?”
There’s no official synopsis released and the anticipation is killing everyone, but there are rumors that the plot may revolve around Barbie’s life after she escapes Barbieland and joins the real world. There will be different versions of Barbie and Ken throughout the movie.
Gosling revealed that the script was one of the “Best I’ve ever read. This has been coming my whole life. I think a lot of Kens will feel seen when they see this. Gotta do it for the Kens of the world. Nobody plays with Kens!”
It seems that everybody’s excited for Barbie, even Kubrick estate joined in on the fun and shared the trailer via their official social media accounts with the caption, “They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! Even Barbie is a Kubrick fan…”
