Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk is back with the experimental dance-track “Atopos.” The lead single is from her anticipated 10th studio album Fossora, which will be out on September 30 via One Little Independent Records.
Björk describes the song as a good intro, considering it Fossora’s passport. The Alternative artist shared details of “Atopos” in a tweet: “sonically a heavy bottom-ended bass world we have 6 bass clarinets, punchy sub drilling, nesting and digging us into the ground.”
She also said that the lyrics are inspired by the French philosopher’s Roland Barthes’ Other; “Are these not just excuses to not connect?/ Our differences are irrelevant/ To insist on absolute justice at all times/ It blocks connection.”
Directed by Viðar Logi, the apocalyptic video depicts an underworld full of mushrooms and supernatural vegetation, where Björk and the other musicians are seen in extravagant outfits and make-up. Gabber Modus Operandi’s DJ Kasimyn also joins the eccentric party.
For this album, Björk collaborated with the Indonesian duo Gabber Modus Operandi, serpentwithfeet, and El Guincho. Fossora follows the release of Utopia, which came out in 2017.
