Starting from 2022, the Brit Awards will officially be removing all of their gender-based categories like “Best Male Solo Artist,” “Best Female Solo Artist,” and so on. Instead, they will replace it with gender-neutral categories such as “Artist of the Year,” for instance.
This comes after, non-binary singer-songwriter Sam Smith, complained about the lack of non-binary representation in similar ceremonies after they felt left out in the 2021 awards. They said “I look forward to a time where awards shows can be reflective of the society we live in. Let’s celebrate everybody, regardless of gender, race, age, ability, sexuality, and class.”
The organizers, in the past few years, have constantly reassured fans around the world of their commitment to improving representation in the industry, and especially with their nominations, and wins.
