Schools in Nigeria have turned from being an education facility to a major target for mass abductions and kidnappings.
UNICEF presented data on Wednesday showing that around 1 million Nigerian students will miss school due to the ongoing kidnappings.
Peter Hawkins, who is the UNICEF representative in Nigeria, mentioned that:
“Learners are being cut off from their education… as families and communities remain fearful of sending children back to their classrooms due to the spate of school attacks and student abductions in Nigeria.”
This year alone, there were more than 20 attacks on schools which resulted in the disappearance of 1,400 children and the death of 16 others. Let that sink in for a second!
Many schools, especially those located in Southern Nigeria, decided to close their doors for the time being. While the local security and police forces are working tirelessly on restoring security by capturing the responsible parties.
